An ad hoc is a Latin phrase that means"for this".It is something that is created or done for a specific purpose, problem, or task rather than a generalized solution adaptable to collateral instances. It can be used as an adverb to mean  "for the particular end or case at hand without consideration of wider application and as an adjective to describe something that is temporary, provisional, or improvised.

ex:

We'll hire more staff on an ad hoc basis.

The judge made an ad hoc ruling to allow the evidence to be admitted.
