The Fifteenth Amendment,  prohibits the exclusion of a citizen's right to vote on the grounds of racial background colour, or previous enslavement.

Republican efforts to solidify their hold on both the North and the South served as the primary driving force behind the 15th Amendment. Black votes would contribute to achieving that goal. Congress approved the bill in 1869, and the required three-fourths of the states swiftly ratified it in 1870.
