There are two possibilities for why the Sphinx's nose was broken. The first reason is that Napoleon Bonaparte shot his nose with a cannonball during a French invasion of Egypt in the 18th century. However, there is more evidence to the contrary because paintings of the Sphinx with a broken nose were created in the 17th century, long before Napoleon was born. The second reason is that the nose was destroyed in 1378 CE by a religious rebel named Mohamed Sa'm al-Dahr, who was later executed for vandalism. Of course, weather and corrosion could have simply damaged the nose.
