 No, area and surface area aren't the same .Surface area is for 3-dimensional solids as it's a measure of the total area occupied by the surface of a body  such as a sphere, cylinder or a cuboid, while area is a measure of an area confined to a specific range on a surface and an expression of the size of a 2-dimensional plane for ex the area of a piece of land. Area  and surface area are expressed in square units.
